Simonds No. 222

Post by underbucker » August 3rd, 2015, 2:52 pm

I am restoring a 4 1/2 ft. Simonds No. 222 saw for PCTA. I would like some help in determining the age of the saw. It has a variation of the vintage maker's mark that I have not seen before. It has "CHICAGO ILL. FITCHBURG MAS." below the upper banner as is often seen. But below the lower banner are three lines:
"BRANCH HOUSES" in large font
"NEW YORK ..............." in small font
"SEATTLE, WASH. SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. LON .........." also in small font.
Can anyone tie this mark to a specific timeframe?

I don't remember seeing a logo with only a single line of "Branch Houses", but I have a 1919 Simonds catalog reprint that shows
a very similar logo that was in use then - except there are three lines of branch house names.
1) New York, New Orleans, Portland, Ore
2) Seattle Wash, San Francisci Cal.
3) London, England. Montreal, PQ

The 222 model saw is in the catalog

Gary,

Thanks. This saw has two lines below "BRANCH HOUSES":
1. NEW YORK NEW ORLEANS PORTLAND (no state abbreviations on this line)
2. SEATTLE, WASH. SAN FRANCISCO, CAL. LONDON ENG.

I could not find a link to PDFs of early Simonds Catalogs.

This link has a timeline for the company.....

The Seattle branch opened in 1898, and Montreal opened in 1906,
so your saw is probably between those dates.

I purchased the 1919 catalog reprint on eBay about two years ago.
It's good to hear that you are still taking care of the PCTA crews!
