Identification help

Hi all I was given this saw recently it is 5ft long & had Disston USA stamped in the handles. Any information on model, age etc would be appriciated.

Those are auxiliary handles for one man saws, not typically used for 2-man saws. Removing some rust from the center of your felling saw might reveal a maker's etch. Go easy with fine sandpaper or steel wool. Saw doesn't look as if its ever been filed.

Just to add that the etch will be at the center of the saw, but on one side or the other for that type of saw. Go VERY slow with removing the rust and watch for any indication of an etch as it can disappear quickly. I use a water trickle and a natural pumice stone for the etch area. Stroke only in the direction of grind which will be longitudinal to the blade on this saw.

A 3M grille brick (search on ebay) will work like the natural pumice stone but it is more aggressive and can take the etch off quickly. However, this grille brick works very nicely on the rest of the saw.
