Simonds 520 RAINIER ?

Post by sandersdwa » February 22nd, 2016, 9:20 pm

Have an unusual etch on a saw that is a Simonds saw that appears to be a 520. I can not find an example of an etch like this one and hope somebody has another good example.
The text at the top is SIMONDS MANUFG CO. It appears to have a banner with RAINIER. Might also appear to have the 520 at the bottom center.
Appreciate any information you might have on this saw and/or an example etch that is similar.
Thanks,
Don

Looks interesting. Can you get a better pic of the etch? Also, what are the dimensions of the saw?

Here is another attempt to get a better picture. I can verify that the top line (arc) says SIMONDS MANUFG CO. Below that is WORKS, then next line is CHICAGO, ILL. FITCHBERG, MASS.
Below that is a banner with RAINIER in large text within the banner. Below that is BRANCH HOUSES, then NEW YORK NEW ORLEANS and below that SEATTLE WASH SAN FRANCISCO.
Below the entire etch is NO 520.

Trollypup already asked about the handle holes and they are in the same location as all other 520 and the gullets are 3/4" like all other 520.
Thickness at middle tooth is 0.096" and 0.057" at the back of this 7' saw.

I'm just surprised with this etch as I have not seen any others like it in the catalogs or otherwise.

A cut down example of a Simonds Rainer on EBay.......

"Up for bid in this auction is a Rare 5 1/2 ft. Simonds "Rainier" Two Man Cross Cut Logging Saw with Western Handles made for Seattle Hdwe Co. This saw has all its teeth in the Lance Tooth Pattern, has some stains, some light pitting, and a etch showing "Simonds Saw Company, Rainier, Made Expressly for Seattle Hardware, Seattle, Wash" as well as various patent dates."

Gary,
Thanks. I also noticed it when it was posted for sale. I've been busy or I would have pulled my saw out and looked for the "hardware" part of the etch. I hope I did not loose any of it during cleanup.

It is good to find out more about my saw. Now I need to find a hardware store catalog or flier to go with it.

My 520 has no separate Seattle Hardware etch. The main etch is a SIMONDS MANUFACTURING CO etch with much more detail than the cutoff 520 for sale. The RAINIER in the banner appears similar or the same. I've wondered if RAINIER was the name of the model until it was given the 520 number?
