Warren Miller's Setting Anvils

Post by MangoBoy » May 1st, 2022, 4:20 pm

In 2012, I was lucky to attend one of Warren Miller's saw sharpening class at Nine Mile Ranger Station.

At the class, he used a near-cylindrical tapered setting anvil. I think he said it was a conveyor belt roller.

In the 2003 revision of his 1977 Crosscut Saw Manual, he is shown using it on Page 20.

On Page 28 in the Glossary, it is shown as the left item in Figure J.

Does anyone know just what it was to start with, and where I might find one ?

I believe it is a very large roller bearing roller. I don't know where you'd fine one but other things like a hammer head should work the same.

Perhaps the barrel shape of the bearing roller is more ergonomic than a hammer head. The photo isn't crisp enough to see if he beveled the striking edge. I've used a 3lb. drilling hammer head for many years.
