Re: Show us your axe!

I have a number of cool old axes that would be the same vintage as the saws we use but we often have multi-day backpacks to clear a trail system and it makes sense to save some weight, hence the Fiskars. It brought to mind the tread tools we used then and that we use now. Twenty years ago there were...

Re: Show us your axe!

We've been using a lighter weight Fiskars to bark and pound wedges for the past three years. Does the job and lots lighter than the 3 1/2 pound Plumb we used for years. Pair with 5-ft to 6-ft Simonds No. 13 or 324 and various D-handles.

Re: Gumming

Here is a short video of The Gummer in action on a Simonds No. 223. Only removing about 1/8 inch in the gullets. I use a die grinder to get the rakers closer to the desired shape.

Re: Atkins 1940 Eastern Crosscut Saw catalog

Great addition! I especially appreciate that it has the Actual Size Sections for the different tooth patterns - really helpful when restoring a saw.

I agree with the Atkins call. The shape of the cutter teeth is the same as others I've seen.

Re: HDPE dial indicator

Really nice work! How close is the variance in the sets along the saw? Within .002" with the spider compared to the gauge? Another way to say it, for example, is that the spider is .008" but can be .006" to .010" when compared to the gauge.

Re: Need help Identifying a one man

I counted a number of starter teeth at the toe of the saw, 13? It has been filed a lot so any tooth shape was lost a long time ago. A quick look through some old catalogs show that Atkins had seven starters, Disston might have had 11 starter teeth and Simonds more in the 5 to 7. If you can find a st...

Re: One-man Helper handle removal?

Hi frizzen, PATCsawyer has the real deal in getting the new hardware. I go the salvage or stove bolt route. In one of my photos there is a stove bolt with the head cut off and then I slotted the end of the bolt and drilled holes for the pin. Note that square nuts are used for the bolt in the handle....

Re: One-man Helper handle removal?

Nice work! I found one picture of some home made handles that I'll attach. I try to use the original hardware but not always possible. I've even had new threads welded onto the flange and pin so I could use the hardware that attaches to the saw. I've also used stove bolts, cut off the head, slot the...
