Re: 2 man saw storage?

I was expecting a response to your noodles - they are really long and uniform in length! Nice job! I was also wondering how wide they were. for a Simonds 324 (,090" + .012" set on each side = .0114" wide). Yours look wider. I also noticed whiskers on one side of each noodle which I interpret to mean...

Re: 2 man saw storage?

I have a two-foot long, 3/4 inch galvanized pipe mounted about six inches away from and parallel to the wall. I cut pieces of metal coat hangers about six inches long and bend them to hang over the pipe and through a hole on the end of the saw. Teeth are toward the wall. I can also hang sheaths next...

Re: Curtis Saw Catalog 1946

This is great, first time I've seen a Curtis catalog! I didn't see a mention of the diamond around a circle stamp. I don't normally see an etch but I do see the diamond/circle on D-handles.

Re: Two Saws: Simonds No. 13 vs Atkins No. 330

Absolutely. I see this on lance-tooth saws. With the dial gauge, I can see where the set starts. For those teeth that have a set a half inch or more away from the tip, I will try to "straighten" it out. I can do that with the hard blows on the flat when the tooth is convex or turn the saw over and u...

Re: Two Saws: Simonds No. 13 vs Atkins No. 330

Here's how I try to set teeth: I have the tooth extend 5 to 7mm from edge of anvil (I'm using mm here because I don't like to think in 1/32ths). My "anvil" is a 1 1/2 inch steel plate about 18 X 12 inches with about three mm of the working edge filed at 30 degrees. With a dial gauge, I can effective...

Two Saws: Simonds No. 13 vs Atkins No. 330

I have been filing two similar saws. Both are two-person tuttle tooth saws, 5 ½ feet long. One is rustier than the other but both are good saws and both have been used to clear trails in the Houston area. One is a Simonds No. 13. The other has no visible etch. The Simonds is .090” thick at the teeth...

Re: Gumming

Given a saw with gullets that look like those in the June 14, 2019 post from Jim Thode: First, I joint the saw and don't really pay attention to maintaining the arc of the saw - it will flatten over time. When I didn't have The Gummer, I used to file the gullets so they were smooth so the cuttings w...

Re: Show us your axe!

I have a number of cool old axes that would be the same vintage as the saws we use but we often have multi-day backpacks to clear a trail system and it makes sense to save some weight, hence the Fiskars. It brought to mind the tread tools we used then and that we use now. Twenty years ago there were...
