Re: Which Saw for me
Crescent ground saws like the Simonds 13 bucking saw are a light carry. More of a hardwood saw but will cut whatever you feed it and you can file it for your preferred performance. The Simonds 325 is another fine light carry saw. Channel lattice is best IMHO for sheath material (at bottom). I slide ...

Re: Plastic lattice trim saw sheath
Always looking for a better way to make these guards. The only fail I've ever had with one was on the center strap. That's the point of maximum flex and it cracked in-line with a small hole I'd drilled. It was also a very cold day. Never had any trouble with the end attachments no matter how I drill...

Re: Post-Tornado Wilderness Logout, BWCA
I would've brought two more people (we had five). Another pair of sawyers/swampers would've finished the logout and had time to fill in some of the worst rootball craters. I had all the tools we needed with a couple of one man's to spare. Most of the limbing was done with Silky saws which took more ...

Post-Tornado Wilderness Logout, BWCA
I had the opportunity to volunteer some time with a North Country Trail/USFS crew last month to clear about a mile of tornado-damaged trail in northern Minnesota. The wilderness area was remote and a long (for me) canoe paddle to the camp and work site. My tool selection is probably of most interest...

Re: wooden crate or box for saw transportation.
When I moved to Michigan a couple years ago I had to crate up all my saws for the movers. I put about a dozen in each box teeth up with channel lattice over the cutters. Saws were slotted into two kerf blocks, one at each end to keep them separated. Top, bottom and ends were 1x8 boards with ripped 3...

Re: Warren Miller's Setting Anvils
Perhaps the barrel shape of the bearing roller is more ergonomic than a hammer head. The photo isn't crisp enough to see if he beveled the striking edge. I've used a 3lb. drilling hammer head for many years.

Re: homemade jointer
It depends on how much jointing you need to do. Saws "coming in from the wild" can be pretty snaggle-toothed, especially Jemco saws. I'll start them with a double cut file as it's more aggressive then finish with a smoother file. I don't put much bend in the file as you can overdo that. But most joi...
