Re: Bell System Lineman's Hammer - Looks Good for Setting-Swaging
That is an interesting hammer. The small face is similar in size to a normal swaging hammer but the larger body may get in the way some. I added a little relief on my home made hammer and I see little divots from adjacent points on well used swaging hammers. https://a4.pbase.com/o6/18/427118/1/14721...

Re: Which Saw for me
The type/size of saw depends on that size of logs and if single bucking or all two man bucking. For logs up to about 3' I like a quality 5' bucking saw. It is not that much heavier then a falling saw and works well for single bucking. Some use fire hose for saw guards or Vinyl Lattice Cap from Lowes...

Re: Which Saw for me
Yes, what Gary said, the recommended standard is for vintage saws of good quality that are sized for the job at hand. Anther option may be a Katanaboy 1000mm folding saw but they are pricey and still have their limits. They also do not cut as fast as traditional crosscut saws. Gary, I just bucked ou...

Re: Handles and Holes
Western style falling saws have a single hole and bucking saws have two holes. The two holes on a bucking saw can be used to change then down pressure on the saw when single bucking. The hole near the back will put more down pressure on the push stroke of the saw and the hole near the teeth will put...

Re: A ripsaw conversion candidate?
Because of the overall shape of the teeth and the shape of the points of the teeth I would call that a rip saw as it is. Just may need to be sharpened a little to be serviceable.

Re: 2 man saw storage?
I also noticed whiskers on one side of each noodle which I interpret to mean that the rakers are a skosh higher on that side, maybe only .004" below the cutters. Or, the cutters are slightly shorter on one side. I believe the reason some noodles show whiskers on one side is not because there is som...

Re: 2 man saw storage?
For active storage where you need to have ready access to any one saw all the time it is hard to beat the classic method: Saw Shack.jpg For easier and more efficient use of space that is not as accessible, just a single nail on a wall can hold several saws. If they are sharp the teeth can be alterna...

I believe it is a very large roller bearing roller. I don't know where you'd fine one but other things like a hammer head should work the same.

Re: homemade jointer
Another thing to take into account is that many one man saws have an arc that varies over the length of the saw. They are not a true circular arc and a long jointer would be counter productive.

Re: Hard lesson on fractured teeth. Simonds No. 13
Colorado Joe, For the hammer on flat anvil set method to work the saw has to be held firmly on the anvil, If you do not you will likely break the tooth. https://a4.pbase.com/g12/18/427118/2/172418825.hKTUHkbs.jpg For the missing, it relatively easy for anyone with a welder to weld replacement teeth ...
