Re: Bell System Lineman's Hammer - Looks Good for Setting-Swaging

Narrowing the hammer back of the face is a good idea.

I remember a big mistake with an adjacent tooth.

And there are several ball peen hammers lying around here somewhere.

Warren Miller's Setting Anvils

In 2012, I was lucky to attend one of Warren Miller's saw sharpening class at Nine Mile Ranger Station. At the class, he used a near-cylindrical tapered setting anvil. I think he said it was a conveyor belt roller. In the 2003 revision of his 1977 Crosscut Saw Manual, he is shown using it on Page 20...

Re: Wanted: Vintage setting/swaging hammer

Considering the prices for a good old saw set-swaging hammer, I am going to grind down the faces of an auto body hammer to make a saw hammer.

It would be good to hear from everyone about the best face diameter for a set-swaging hammer.

Re: Hammers - swaging and setting

Considering the prices that saw set hammers go for, I have bought a 3-lb drilling hammer, and plan to grind it down (take away everything that doesn't look like a saw set hammer).

What is the very best set hammer style and weight any of you has tried ?
