Re: Simonds Felling Saw (#513?)

Thanks Jim. Duncan was also certain it was a 513. I was just curious about the taper. It appears to be consistent with what other filers have seen. Maker's mark was very indistinct but I could match specific parts of the mark with photo you provided. It may have been etched but, if so, was very shal...

Simonds Felling Saw (#513?)

Just finished cleaning and restoring this Simonds Royal Chinook 7' felling saw. Nearly original condition - rakers had never been swaged and cutters showed minimal wear. However, there is a full gauge difference in the cutter thickness between midpoint and heel (.099" in middle and .090" at heel). A...

Re: Handles for Atkins #4 hammer

First two prototypes of Dolly's modifications to Atkins #4 setting swaging hammer completed. Dolly is testing one, I am working with the second in my shop.

Re: Handles for Atkins #4 hammer

Trailsawyer, You are right. The design we came up with is like a hybrid of the Atkins #4 and the Simonds swaging hammer. The cross-section is like Atkins but we have flattened out the bottom and added "cheeks" at 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock like the Simonds. This should provide better clearance and a be...

Re: Handles for Atkins #4 hammer

Dolly and I will test the first prototypes in March. If we are satisfied with the results, I'll make a few dozen. I'll post on For Sale Forum when ready.

Re: Handles for Atkins #4 hammer

Jim, Weight of new hammer will be identical to Atkins #4. If prototypes test well, I may decide to to second model weighing with 2-3 ounces more. With the exception of the changes I made to the bottom, shape will remain traditional. Filers can modify the hammerhead in any way they choose with a grin...

Re: Handles for Atkins #4 hammer

Jim, Interesting. When Dolly first spoke to me about reproducing the Atkins #4, the first change she asked for was more clearance under the swaging face. Here is a front view rendering of what I am working on. Hammer - Front.png The face is still circular, but I have shaped the bottom of the head mu...

Re: Handles for Atkins #4 hammer

Thanks for responses. Since these hammers are so well regarded, I was thinking of doing a small production run with a few minor changes suggested by Dolly. I will also be using an improved alloy (^ toughness, greater wear resistance).

Re: Need help with tooth pattern

Well, Treeline, looks like you are correct. Cleaned saw yesterday and found Simond's No. 202 makers mark.
