Axe with hardened poll?

Postby trailcrew » January 23rd, 2016, 8:45 am

I'm trying to track down an axe to use for general carpentry on wilderness timber projects. I know rafting axes have a hardened poll that'd be nice for pounding on framing chisels and nails, but don't they tend to be a bit heavy for more delicate work like cutting joints? There are some cool videos on the interweb of Finnish carpenters building traditional log cabins mostly with axes and in Werner Herzog's "Happy People" he shows Siberian trappers using axes for general carpentry. I've looked at the offerings from Gransfors, Iltis, and Wetterlings and can't find any mention of a hardened poll. So in short, I want a smallish axe with a straight single bevel edge and a hardened poll. Anyone know one that fits the bill?

Not offhand, but perhaps a custom axe maker could do one up for you. Otherwise you could repurpose a shingling hatchet. I think those have a hardened poll for hammering.

I did see that. So far it's the closest thing to what I have in mind. I guess what I'm really after is one of the axes they use in this video....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3J5wkJFJzE They use those axes for everything!

Found one! http://www.neemantools.com/en/products/ ... forest-axe
For only $500 and 12 months wait, I can have an axe that can do only slightly more than my hudson bay. Not worth it to me, I'm afraid, but they look to be beautifully made tools.

The Neeman axe looks nice but would not meet the original requirement of a hardened poll. The poll and eye are made of mild steel and with the relatively thin section would not hold up to pounding on hard things. A modern axe with a heavier poll would most likely stand up to occasional hammering quite well.

Now I know what you are after. How does this sound. I am off to northern Norway in July and always have a good look around junk shops etc. Found one in Bergan with about 30 axes in it.https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@60.39698 ... 56!6m1!1e1 So if the Norse gods are with us,(which I think they may be with this one) I may be able to get one for you and ship it out to you if you wish. As Norway have mainly timber framed houses then they too will have that type or a version of, also as they border Finland it may be a common axe. As I will be in that region anyway. I will do it just at cost. As to me $500 is a lot of money for an axe. Cheers Sawman.

So here's an idea. I have a modern Snow and Neally Hudson Bay that I've always been a little ambivalent about. The balance on the head is pretty bit forward anyways, what if I find a hunk of air hardening steel, weld it on the poll, and then heat it up to a bronze color and let it cool. I could even bring the temper down in the kitchen oven. Voila, hardened poll?
